When Hector Cabrera was eight years old, growing up in El Salvador, he asked his mother for a bicycle. She couldn't afford one — so she bought him a horse instead.

He had no interest in becoming a jockey. For the next eight years, he saved.

At sixteen, he bought his first real bike — an English-made Quetzal, orange, built for speed. The two of them became, as he'd later say, quite a team. That bike carried him across thousands of miles of professional road, through the peaks and punishing descents of international competition. Today it hangs high on the front wall of his shop on Sierra Ave — above the inventory, above the workbench, above everything. No amount of money is bringing it down.

From 1975 to 1982, Hector raced for El Salvador's national cycling team. He competed internationally, placing as high as 10th against elite riders from across the world. He shared roads and race days with the kind of men whose names still hang in poster form behind his counter — Merckx, LeMond, Coppi, Bartali. His biggest thrill was meeting Greg LeMond. De 1975 a 1982, Hector corrió para el equipo nacional de ciclismo de El Salvador. Compitió internacionalmente, llegando a quedar en el 10º lugar entre los mejores corredores del mundo. In 1982, he moved to the United States. The racing chapter closed. Everything else opened.

The years that followed took him through some of Southern California's most respected shops — Martin Imports, Supergo, Ciclery USA. A race teaches you what a bike can do at its absolute limit. A workbench teaches you everything underneath that — the geometry of a frame under real stress, the sound of a bearing starting to go, the feel of a wheel that's close but not quite true. By the time he opened his own place, he'd been working on bikes professionally for over three decades. The racing sharpened him. The repair work deepened him.

Hector opened on Sierra Ave in 2007 — a corridor that has carried the commercial life of Fontana for most of the city's history, running alongside old Route 66, which turns one hundred years old in 2026. He never imagined having a space as big as the one he has now. But he grew into it, adjusted, and hasn't looked back.

Hector abrió en Sierra Ave en 2007 — un corredor que ha llevado la vida comercial de Fontana durante la mayor parte de la historia de la ciudad, corriendo junto a la vieja Ruta 66, que cumple cien años en 2026. Milena has been beside him through all of it. The warmth people describe when they walk in — the sense of being genuinely taken care of — that's the two of them together.

His son, Hector Jr., followed him into the sport. He raced for El Salvador's national team in 2000, carrying the same colors down the same kind of roads.

Riders come from across the Inland Empire to bring their bikes to Hector. Not because he's the closest option — because when you find someone who loves what they're doing, who gives you a fair price before touching anything and sticks to it, who goes a little further than you asked without being asked, you stop looking around.
